ALNA makes submission to Competition and Consumer Amendment (Misuse of Market Power) Bill 2016

ALNA has had a strong interest in the proposed reforms in relation to Misuse of Market Power (Section 46) and we have participated in all the consultations during the Harper Competition Law review leading up to this. We made a further submission this week on the proposed amendment Bill.

A suitable Bill for Misuse of Market Power is very important to support an equitable culture between big business and small.

ALNA says blood & bone marrow donor leave should be Government's responsibility

The Shop Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (SDA) have made a claim with the Fair Work Commission (FWC), as part of the four year review of modern awards, for the inclusion of blood and bone marrow donor leave to be included in the General Retail Industry Award 2010 (GRIA); along with several other awards.

EXTRACT | The Benefits of Casual Leasing

Many years ago, when I was a centre manager, newsagents had a real penchant for casual mall leasing, particularly during high trading seasonal periods such as Christmas and Back-to-School. Often newsagents would book months in advance to take 10-15sqm space in the busiest part of the shopping centre. These newsagents would sell everything from calendars, diaries, stationery, gift cards and wraps and generate very good sales in return. Landlords love casual leasing as it has two main benefits.

Firstly, it generates enormous profit margins and, secondly, it provides them with the ability to trial new retail concepts to see how shoppers will respond. If these new concepts prove popular with shoppers, the landlord will often end up negotiating a new long-term lease with the retailer; so it becomes a real win/win outcome for both parties.

NSW Lotteries Authorisation and Update

As the only association with authorisation to represent Lottery agents in NSW and ACT, chief executive Adam Joy and I, met with the Tim Jensen, General Manager of NSW Retail, NSW Lotteries on Friday, 16th December.

For the removal of doubt (NANA - Newsagents association of NSW and ACT) have not had authorisation to represent NSW and ACT newsagents since October 2016.

Gordon and Gotch's Returns Program

Gordon and Gotch (GGA) have completed a six-month review of EDI sales versus return data processed. GGA reports that approximately 350 newsagents have been identified as fully compliant as well as meeting the gold level standard through XchangeIT. GGA will be advising these newsagents in January that as of February 2017 they will not have to make any physical returns excepting partworks and specific trading cards.

ALNA has been working with GGA, via the MPA trial and continual dialogue, to help assist our members with reducing the workload and costs involved in processing physical returns.

Collective Bargaining - Are you at risk? As an ALNA member you are protected

The Competition and Consumer Act (CCA) generally requires businesses to act independently of their competitors when making decisions about pricing, which firms they do business with, and the terms and conditions of doing business.

In normal circumstances, when competitors act collectively, (ie. when two or more competitor businesses come together to negotiate with a supplier or a customer over terms, conditions and prices), they may be engaging in anti-competitive conduct, and are at risk of breaching the competition provisions of the Act.

Creating Window Displays That Sell

Window displays can be used to sell if they are creative and eye-catching. They are the only major marketing tool that retailers do not have to pay much money for, because they are part of the store's architecture, excluding the initial set up costs. So it is worth trying to get the most from them.

The challenge for newsagents in setting up their window display is the size of the objects on sale are the not the easiest thing for passers-by to focus on. The merchandise is so small it makes it difficult to create a successful window display. Items should be visible from two metres away, which is the distance display windows should catch a person's attention and clearly define what product is being promoted.

Newsagents placing no restrictions for card purchases

As Australian consumers continue to use less cash as they shop, more newsagents are removing restrictions on small transactions for card purchases.

Long-time newsagents Ian Hunt and Narith Lim made the decision to remove restrictions for card purchases in response to meeting the needs of their customers.
