New Direct-to-Bank money transfer service

Western Union agents can now offer their customers another service with the Direct-to-Bank transactions.

Bryden and Kris of BN2K Newsagency in Campsie process about 12-15 Western Union transactions per day and 30-40 on religious holidays and Bryden says his customers like to send directly to another Western Union location using the new Direct-to-Bank option.

"Customers who send amounts of money under $400 pay lower fees when sending money direct to the recipient's bank account and it is often easier for the recipients to get to a bank than to the Western Union outlet." explained Bryden.

Because it is new, customers with limited understanding of English need a little time to get used to the idea and to suggest to their family that a bank account could be a good idea, but Bryden says it saves them money and so he expects Direct-to-Bank to grow.

Direct-to-Bank transactions see the money available in 24 hours to India and in real time to the Philippines.

"It is good to attract these customers as we have to continually find products beyond newspapers and magazines. We merchandise our stock constantly; back-to-school is gone, now it's Valentine's Day, then we will promote the educational books focused in the Naplan tests and then Easter and Mother's Day. And every day there are the Western Union customers.

"I say to my friends that a newsagency is a lot more than selling newspapers."
